Evy : 18 months, Daddy : 30 years, Mommy : 28 years (and 32 weeks pregnant)

It's hard to believe our girl is a year and a half. Time flies when you're having fun (and having kids). It's been a good past few weeks for us. We celebrated Josh's 30th birthday, my 28th, and are quickly approaching baby Violet's arrival. She's due April 9th, but considering how fast 18 months has gone, 8 weeks will be a blink!

Evy is growing and learning so quickly! Josh and I are impressed daily with her expanding vocabulary (45 words today!) and understanding. She loves books, songs, baths, food, Elmo, playing outside, and her baby dolls.

We got together with Josh's family yesterday and his sister Sarah blessed us again with her gift of photography. Evy's increasingly active, curious nature posed a rewarding challenge for Sarah; we think she demonstrated her skill with flying colors by capturing all these great action shots!

So here we are trying to captivate Evy with bubbles but no matter what we do, she just can't get her mind off of that playground of in the distance (to her right).

She took a quick break from her pilgrimage to the playground so she could snuggle w/ us and give Violet a kiss/hug. Evy has picked this up from Josh. Josh very regularly talks to Violet, rubs my tummy, etc. so Evy does the same. Sometimes she rubs my tummy and says, "Kick! Kick!" The sweetest part is that Violet responds to both of them too!

And she's back on her way...

Christmas

We had such a great Christmas this year!
Above is Evy sporting some reindeer antlers.
Evy has recently begun smiling and posing for pictures. This is her favorite smile to use. After we take the picture she likes to see it (the joys of digital cameras) and she seems to find herself quite entertaining. We agree, of course.

This strainer makes a great hat. And Evy thinks this picture is hilarious.

One of the most special parts of our Christmas this year was telling Evy the Christmas story. Her favorite books were the ones about Baby Jesus. In fact, she sang her first words, "Jesus, Jesus" while reading a favorite Christmas book.
She spent a lot of time playing w/ our Nativity set, which is actually ceramic, so we had to keep a close eye on her, but she was really careful and took good care of all the pieces. Jesus was her favorite piece. It was not uncommon for Jesus to be missing from the rest of the set because He was off "ministering" somewhere else in the house.
Below, she's carefully playing w/ the Nativity. We're not exactly sure how the Nutcracker got in there, but we figured Evy is an evangelist. More about that later.

Here she is enjoying our church's kids program on Grandma's lap, sitting beside her great grandparents.

Her favorite part was watching her cousins dance and sing as angels announcing Jesus' birth to the shepherds.

As I mentioned before, Evy is an evangelist. Our church has life size nativity in the sanctuary during the advent season and Evy LOVES it. Lately, every time we go to church we say, "Let's go see Jesus!" The morning of this kids' program, when we walked into the sanctuary, we realized that Jesus was missing from the nativity because He's going to be in the kids' program that night. Evy was a little confused about it and spent a little time looking for Him as well as "talking" about how He wasn't there.

After the service, Grandma (Josh's mom) took Evy up on stage and showed her that Jesus was just hiding behind the inn set, in preparation for His big show. As soon as Evy saw that Jesus was there, she turned right around, with much "rejoicing," and hurried off to tell Grandpa and bring him over to see for himself! Then of course, she had to tell Daddy too! Daddy even took Jesus out of the manger so she could give him a hug and a pat.

It reminded me of when the shepherds found Jesus and were so excited that they had to "go tell it on the mountain!"

Uncle Tad put lots of time and love into making these beautiful blocks for Evy. She liked them so much, she climbed right into the box. She hasn't figured out how to build anything yet, but she's great at demolishing everything others try to build.

One of my favorite parts of Christmas is acting out the Christmas story as a family. We even had costumes this year! Last year, Evy played the part of Jesus and was quite content to lay in the manger while we acted out the story around her. This year, she brought her favorite baby doll to play the part of Jesus. Here she is, carefully laying baby in the manger and helping Mary and Joseph (Megan and Grandpa) with childcare . Though she was a sheep for the scene w/ the shepherds, we're not exactly sure what part Evy is playing here. Maybe the holy nanny?

The cast

On Christmas morning we gave Evy a big toy for the yard (a hand - me - down from her cousins). It's a slide w/ a fort underneath. Here she is trying it out. Yes, she tasted some dirt and frosty tomatoes a few minutes before.

Here we are with Mom's side. The 3 Es (Evy, Eden, and Elly) enjoyed playing together in their matching panda pajamas. It's great that they're all so close in age and share interest in toys.

Halloween

Here's our little ladybug! Evy's friend Rylan loaned her this adorable ladybug costume that Evy was delighted to wear for Halloween this year. Here she is trick or treating (so Mom and Dad could eat all her candy).

Below, Mom dressed up as a mechanic (an old Drama Club costume that could accommodate a small baby belly) and in case you can't tell, Dad is Mr. T.

Here's another trick or treating action shot, but notice the beautiful black cat in the background that so conveniently posed for a Halloween picture. See the end of the post for the story on this cat.

The Black Cat Story:

We've been seeing this cat in our neighborhood for months! I've always thought black cats are beautiful, but this one really got our attention because it kept popping up everywhere! For example, our neighbors went for a walk one day. They saw it as they left their house on one end of the street, and a few minutes later, saw it on the opposite end of the street. They thought, "Wow! What a fast cat to have moved so far in such a short time."
Stories like this started emerging from other neighbors too. One day the cat was wearing a pink collar, the next a purple, the next, no collar at all. In the course of an afternoon, it had sunbathed in all of our yards. She drove our dogs nuts all day!
We started calling her Aretha. And we began to believe Aretha was either very active, or amazing at time management. How did she manage to get so much done each day?
Some time later, one of our neighbors got to talking to a woman who'd moved to the neighborhood a few months before and had a hard time keeping track of her 2 cats.
"What do they look like?" asked our neighbor.
"Oh, they're twin males, maybe you've seen them around, they're both all black."
Ha! That explained everything. Needless to say, many of us still call them "Aretha."

On August 7th we threw a birthday party for Evelyn in our backyard.

Nana made her this cat cake. Evy loves cats! (And she stuck her finger in the frosting when she saw her cake.)

Since Evy and Rylan (5th cousin) were born only 9 days apart, they opened their first gifts to each other together.

Wilkinson Family Camp Out

When I (Crystal/ Mom) was younger, we had Wilkinson Family Camp Outs every summer. This year, over 15 years since the last one, we had another! It was so great to get to know each other again, and to meet each others' spouses, kids, and friends.

Thanks to my cousin Mollie who took most of these pics w/ her powerful camera and photography skills.

Three days shy of 11 months old, Evelyn is walking on her own! We're so proud of our girl! We took this video about 10 minutes after she started walking. (We were a bit too enamored to grab the camera at first). She is heading toward one of her favorite attractions, the open dishwasher. At the end of the video it looks like she takes a mean spill but she actually caught herself on the door of the dishwasher with no harm done.

Little Explorer

Due to her increased mobility (crawling, cruising, and ALMOST walking), Evelyn is becoming quite the little explorer! Everyday is filled with exciting new discoveries!
Above, she's enthralled with Josie's water bowl (and food bowl . . . yum). Evelyn often likes to go visit Josie's food dish while Josie is trying to eat. Like a good dog, Josie just backs away and watches, waiting for one of us to notice and redirect Evy, at which time, Josie can finish her dinner in relative peace.

Below, Evelyn's wearing a tutu and playing with dolls. Mom is so proud. As you can see, waving is pretty popular in our house right now. Squealing and screaming are also popular.

Below is an example of what happens when Evelyn is given access to the fridge. She's like a moth to the flame whenever I open the door. She sees the light, feels the cool air, and hurries over to see what she can find to snack on. Notice when I ask her what she is doing, she responds quite appropriately. You can imagine her saying, "Eating a peach, Mom."

The Coast

We went to the coast for 4th of July weekend and took Evelyn to the beach for the first time. Josh's family has a condo near the beach in Aptos (just south of Santa Cruz).

She was pretty cautious about the water. (See the adorable video clip at the end of this post)

She's getting closer and closer to walking by herself.

The weather was just perfect on Saturday...

...sunny and warm with lots of little kids and dogs running around everywhere (Evy and Josie both got plenty of exercise).

Sunday, on the other hand, was a little chilly so we had a quick picnic and headed back to the condo.

Back at the condo, we warmed up by reading some books. Evelyn loves reading books!
Her current favorites are Goodnight Gorilla, There's a Monster at the End of this Book, Peekaboo I love You, The Big Hungry Bear, and The Creation.

While we were snuggling here in the recliner with a good book (Eclipse), I remembered back to a year ago...

9 Months Old

Road Trip: Portland, OR

Last weekend we went on a road trip to Portland, Oregon. It was Evy's first trip out-of-state and we drove over 1,500 miles. She was a great sport! Josh drove, by the way, not Evy.

Josh's cousin Shannon and her husband Greg were married in Portland on Feb. 27th.

Greg and Shannon were married in this romantic, cozy, candlelit library. Check out the amazing ceiling, woodwork, and fireplace!

Evy spent some social time with her aunts and uncles and grandparents. And we all enjoyed the delicious food!

She even rocked out a bit with Grandpa.

We had some time to do a bit of sight seeing in Portland too. Here we are in the garden of the Pittock Mansion. The weather was perfect!

We enjoyed being outside and exploring the grounds of the mansion.

Isn't this amazing?! I've always wanted to use a picture like this on one of our Christmas cards and have the caption read, "Merry Christmas from our home to your's"

Grandpa was trying to get Evy's attention to take this picture so we suggested he make some animal sounds (which made us laugh).

It was chilly, so to keep Evy warm I wore her in the Moby wrap inside my coat.

We had a good snuggle.

We especially like all the bridges in Portland. Here's a nice view of one from our hotel's parking lot (and I think it's over the Willamette River). Notice Evy is more interested in the view than the camera.

On our way home, we stopped by Aunt Joanne's (the Mother of the Bride). It was special for her and Evy to meet after she'd prayed for Evy.

And here was one of the HIGHlights (pun intended) of the trip: Mt. Shasta! I have to add, this was the view on the way home. On the way there we could hardly see 100 feet in front of us because we had rain, sleet, and snow! But God protected us and we had a WONDERFUL trip.

Disneyland

This past weekend, we enjoyed a trip to Disneyland with Josh's family. Here's Evy pulling the sword out of the stone to become the new queen!

Evy enjoyed being with her relatives. She gave lots of great smiles to Aunt Sarah so she could take these pictures.

It got a little chilly at night so we had to bundle up.

Over the River and Through the Woods...

We celebrated Christmas with Mommy's family in Pine Mountain (which is literally over the river and through the woods, to Grandmother's house...)

Evy got to know her sweet, laid back cousin Elly a bit better. (Whoops, forgot to rotate this one... Mommy-brain.)

She was delighted with her stocking stuffer.

Josie thoroughly enjoys Pine Mountain.
There are so many good laps to nap on and critter tracks in the snow to smell.

Grandpa is always ready and willing to snuggle his grandgirls...

... and so is Nana.
(By the way, Great Grandma and Papa Jim gave Evy this little glow sea-horse that Evy promptly fell in love with. We think his name is Humphrey, but we're not sure.)

Yesterday we went to the doctor. Evy weighed in at 15lbs 6 oz! I didn't believe it and had to see the scale myself. Sure enough - she's off the charts!

Evy's First Trip

This past weekend, we took Evy for her first trip down to Simi Valley. When we got there, a few of us were tired from the long drive. But the next morning... we woke up to this giant cupcake and all these baby cupcakes!

Lots of friends and family came to love on Evy.
